You Only Need The Faith Of A Mustard Seed
Life is hard. Everywhere you turn you run into another struggle. It seems like you will never find the peace that comes from EMPOWERMENT towards a HOPE and a FUTURE.
But you are now at the spot of being “sick and tired of being sick and tired”. Whether that “sickness” is a struggle with addiction, mental illness, finances, family harmony—you’ve had it!
Now it may seem that any one of these problems is as huge as a mountain in your life. How can you overcome your situation?
This is a small word, “faith” and it holds so much power in it at the same time. But it also seems to be so far out of reach also. How much do you need?
What does “faith” mean anyway?
Hebrews 11 in the Bible is described as the “Faith” chapter. It contains many examples of “faith” being lived out by others and the results of that faith.
Beginning in verse 1, faith is described as:
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” – Hebrews 11:1 KJV
Faith is an internal belief of the hope for things to be better and to come into reality. A hope for the things not yet seen or occurring.
That seems almost impossible in itself! To hope and wait for things not yet happening. And to believe that it will happen. You feel that you’ve already been doing that. Always waiting and hoping for things to change, yet they don’t.
But again, the question remains. How much faith do you need?
A Mustard Seed Is Like The Kingdom Of Heaven
There are 2 times in the Bible where the mention of a mustard seed is talked about. Jesus is the one who mentioned it both times.
In the first instance, Jesus was telling the crowd and the disciples about the kingdom of heaven.
Another parable put He forth unto them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: Which indeed is the least of all seed: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.” – Matthew 13:31-32 KJV
Here, Jesus tells us that even with this tiny seed—the mustard seed, it will grow into a mighty tree. A tree big enough and strong enough for even the birds to come and make their homes in the branches.
Yes, that is incredible!
Like the grain of a mustard seed, the least, it is the greatest and becomes a tree.
A tiny seed such as this really does grow into a tree. It will be buried in the ground and struggle to break out of its hard casing and root itself into the ground. Next it also needs to stretch and reach up to the sun. And in order to do that, it must break forth out of the darkness and start growing above the ground too.
Is that where your mustard seed of faith is? Still in the ground trying to break forth to the light? Remember, it must break out of the shell and root itself first. In the darkness, your faith must take roots before becoming the mighty tree.
Move This Mountain
Later on Jesus again mentions the tiny mustard seed.
And Jesus said unto them, “Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If he have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove: and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” – Matthew 17:20-21 KJV
Did you notice? Jesus did not say you need the faith of a mountain. No, He said you need faith the size of a mustard seed to move the mountain.
Our Heavenly Father knows that we are weak and struggle in this area of our lives with faith. He doesn’t require us to have a lot of it, just a small amount such as the tiny mustard seed.
But even mustering up that much faith can seem as big as the mountain we need to move in our lives.
Remember, Jesus pointed out that the mustard seed is capable of becoming a might tree.
When you can find that mustard seed of faith in your life, you will overcome many of life’s mountains. Whether it is relationship problems, finances, or more. God will be there with you.
But, don’t forget the hard casing holding your faith inside that mustard seed must first break through. Then it must become rooted. Rooted in Christ. Then the EMPOWERMENT towards a HOPE and a FUTURE will rise out of the ground.
Once it breaks forth to the surface, it will increase both in strength and amount. Before you know it, your faith, once so small, that you questioned its very existence, will be a tree.
A tree of faith strong enough to help others whose faith has not yet broken the surface yet.
How Much Faith?
The faith the size of a tiny mustard seed is all that you need to get started. That much faith, deeply rooted in Christ, will help you move the mountains in your life. As you move your mountains, you will be able to show others how to nurture their mustard seeds of faith. Especially those seeds still covered with the hard seed shell.
Is it difficult to find that faith and have it break forth from the shell? No, not as hard as you think. Read this about the faith of a child. All we need to do is reach deep within and find that child like faith. Come to God with that simple child like faith and see the mountains move.
