- and of course, yummy desserts.
And as autumn and cooler temperatures start rolling around, the dreams of firing up the crock pot increase. But don’t let yourself be limited to using it only in the colder months.
You say you love your slow cooker, and you use if often during the cooler months of the year, but what happens come spring? Do you find yourself without realizing it just putting this amazing little kitchen appliance back into the cupboard?
If you ask me, that is a mistake.
Slow cookers, or crock pots if that is what you call them, are wonderful appliances to use year round.
Yes, they are perfect for those hearty winter dishes such as beef stew and dumplings. But who said, stew and dumplings can only be eaten in winter? It is just as delicious in the spring or summer too.
Why Is Stew Only A Winter Food?
Stew is subconsciously thought of as only a winter food because in the past, a pot of stew took hours on the stove top. As a result, they were generally only made during the cold months. Months when people were more likely to be inside. Planting, weeding, and harvesting were finished for another year. And in the cold of winter a hearty stew helped folks stay warm and feel comforted.
But you can bring that comfort food to your home in the middle of summer by using the slow cooker. Although it still slowly simmers and stews your meals, over several hours, it actually uses less electricity than either your stove top or oven. And, wait for it, the bonus, it won’t heat up the house in the process of cooking dinner.
Your slow cooker puts out less heat and is portable and compact too. That means that if necessary, on a really hot day, when your air conditioner is barely able to keep up to the heat, you can go plug your slow cooker on the porch. Thus, you can have dinner cooking while you hang out in the back yard with the kids.
A Barbecue Partner
Your slow cooker also comes in handy anytime you’re grilling in the back yard. Put the crock pot to use fixing side dishes while everyone else gets to hang out in the yard. You can relax and watch your husband grill the burgers.
All you have to do is do some prep work in the morning, such as starting a side dish such as cheesy scalloped potatoes. Then, later you just have to grab that tall glass of ice water with a lemon wedge, and join the fun in the yard.
Of course those same dishes and your crock pot will also come in handy at the annual company BBQ, or the neighborhood party. When you are asked to bring a side dish, cook it in the slow cooker and bring everything along. Just plug it in and those baked beans, or squash casserole you make will still be piping hot when it’s time to eat.
You’ll find the slow cooker is also handy at pot blessings throughout the year and let’s not forget about the holidays. There’s always a lot of cooking going on and you have to do a whole lot of planning to make sure you have room on the stove and in the oven to get it all cooked in time.
Why Not Use It Here? Or There?
How much easier would your holiday cooking be if you could have a couple of things simmering away in your slow cooker(s)? You can start them in the morning and don’t need to worry about anything until it is time to eat.
I tell you, there’s no reason to pack away that slow cooker. You should be using your slow cooker year round. Take it with you on vacation to cook simple meals your kids will love right in the beach house or motel room. Adjust the flavors and seasonings and the types of dishes you cook depending on the season.
Take advantage of this cooking appliance and use your slow cooker all year.
