Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies
Ingredients
Instructions
  1. This can be done over 2 days if desired. This would be Day 1—Make The Dough
  2. In a large bowl, whip the butter until smooth and creamy.
  3. Beat in the 1 cup of white sugar, the well beaten egg, milk, and the vanilla extract.
  4. In a medium sized bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder with a wire whisk.
  5. Add the flour mixture to the butter and sugar mixture. Mix with a wooden spoon until well combined.
  6. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Place in the refrigerator for a minimum of 3-4 hours, or until the dough is firm.
  7. Day 2—Bake The Cookies
  8. Heat the oven to 375 degrees Farhenheit. Make sure the baking rack is in the middle.
  9. Either hand roll the dough into 1 Tablespoon sized balls, or use a 1 Tablespoon sized scoop with a release lever.
  10. Place the rounded balls on a baking sheet about 2 inches apart.
  11. Have a small dish of water available. Dipping a flat bottomed drinking glass in the water.
  12. Now, if using regular white sugar, dip the wet bottom of the glass into the white sugar. Then proceed to press down 1 ball of cookie dough with the glass bottom. Now the cookie is flattened, and lightly topped in sugar. Continue until each cookie ball is flattened. You may find that you can dip back into the sugar a few times as you flatten before having to rewetting the bottom of the glass.
  13. Or, if using candied sprinkles—dip the glass bottom in the water and then immediately flatten the cookie balls. Do not dip into the sprinkles. One, they won’t stick to the bottom of the glass and two, the water will just wash the color off of the sprinkles. Instead, after flattening the cookie balls, sprinkle the candied sprinkles on top of the cookies by hand.
  14. Bake the cookies on the middle rack of the oven for 8 minutes or until the cookies are lightly browned around the edges.
  15. Transfer the cookies to a cooling rack.
