Crock Pot Cranberry BBQ Chicken
Did you know that before Cranberry Sauce was served with turkey, it was served with chicken? During my research for the 150th Canadian Celebration Cookbook, the oldest cookbooks more often referred to cranberry sauce and chicken.
In fact, in the 1877 The Home Cook Book, the following accompaniments are suggested for poultry:
- Turkey—celery and jellies
- Duck—currant jelly
- Chicken—cranberry sauce, apple sauce
So today’s recipe of combining cranberry sauce with chicken is natural. Just ask our Canadian pioneers. They were doing it 150 years ago.
Using The Crock Pot
Today, we don’t have to slave over a hot wood stove all day. No, instead, we can use the crock pot (slow cooker) to make life easier. Using a crock pot is a time saver, hydro saver, and allows you to slow simmer the toughest cuts of meat to perfection.
If you would like to learn to use your crock pot more often in your kitchen—join the 30 Day Crock Pot Challenge. Sign up below, and over the next 30 days, I’ll send you a FREE recipe every day. Simple!
A Modern Taste Twist
So although we are combining cranberry sauce with chicken breasts in today’s recipe, we have updated it too. To give your cranberry sauce some added zing, you will be adding some of your favorite BBQ sauce to it.
Not only will these slow simmered chicken breasts soak up the sweet, yet tart taste of the cranberries, it will have the added spice and zing of BBQ sauce. What a mouth delight for sure.
And even though it is slow simmered in the crock pot, you will have others wondering when you had time to grill this on the barbecue. Especially on the 10th floor of the apartment building. You know barbecues aren’t allowed, but you can still bring the taste home.
Allow the crock pot to do this for you.
And who said cranberries are only for Thanksgiving and Christmas anyways?
So, make any day a festive day of celebration. Our ancestors who founded Canada knew this—cranberries are great with chicken.
