Blueberries are one of those native fruits that can be found in every province and territory of Canada. When the first English settlers arrived to this new land, they referred to them as “whortleberries” or “hurtleberries”. But today we look forward every late summer to these juicy, sweet blue, morsels now known as blueberries.
What Do Blackflies Have To Do With This?
You know there are blueberries in your region of Canada if you happen to be pestered by blackflies. Yes, those annoying pesky blood sucking, biting insects. One might wonder, why did God put such a nuisance insect on this planet anyways?
If you love blueberries then you better be prepared to put up with blackflies. These pesky insects however, just like the honey bee, has a very important role to play. And no, it isn’t just to annoy and bite you. Blackflies pollinate the blueberry bushes. As a result, we have blueberries.
So now we’ve covered the true Canadian ingredient of this recipe. Now we combine the blueberries with an ingredient from Scotland. The Scottish settlers of Canada couldn’t quite make it in this new land without bringing their beloved oats with them.
Scottish settlers of Canada brought their oatmeal with them and as a result, rolled oats are now a well loved tradition for Canadians of all ancestral heritage today. Rolled oats are used in muffins, cakes, apple crisp, and hot oatmeal cereals.
But today, rolled oats are going to be used in combination with Canadian blueberries to make a nice snacking cake. And as you sit and enjoy this snacking cake, you can think about the Canadian heritage of ingredients that bring this snack together.
