Introduction To Real Foods
You’ve been hearing of or seeing a few terms in the dieting, or changed eating lifestyle circles. Terms such as:
- or even the original Atkins lifestyles.
Although each of these will tell you they are different from each other, they are also very similar.
The goal in each of these is having you get back to a more natural food source style of eating. Essentially getting rid of highly starched, sugared, and processed foods. That is a good thing. So whether you go at this from a stronger Paleo, Keto, or Atkins approach, all will result in you rethinking what and how you eat food.
Eating Real Foods Basic Definition
Real Foods is a term I mention here on Free Stuff 4 Daily Needs. Especially when you are struggling financially and have to resort to using Food Banks or Food Stamps.
Our goal is to share tips and techniques with you to EMPOWER you to put real food items on your table. Looking for ways to enable you to replace all the starchy, sugary, and processed foods with natural food.
This eating real foods lifestyle is taken from a combined perspective of Paleo, Keto, and even the Atkins lifestyles. The notion is to get back to as much grass roots eating as possible. Keeping foods simple and as close to their natural state as possible. That means ditch the chips, cookies, and processed foods. Yup, out with the junk!
Remember, food doesn’t have to complicated or even exotic to taste good.
What Are The Food Sources In Your Region?
God placed in every country and region the necessary food items for a balanced diet.
Take the Inuit up in Northern Canada. Have you ever wondered why they don’t die of scurvy? Scurvy is a disease that occurs when you don’t have enough Vitamin C in your diet.
Well, there certainly aren’t any orange groves in the Arctic.
However, God placed seals there. Seal blubber and liver is a naturally high source of Vitamin C. So even before our dietary needs of Vitamins and Minerals was discovered, God already provided exactly what the Inuit needed to be eating.
So, with this kind of thinking, be open to seeing what natural food sources God has placed in your own region to cover all of your nutrient needs.
Beginning Your Day
You may be used to eating an egg sandwich consisting of a bagel or English muffin with an egg in the middle. Or maybe, you don’t even include the egg at all.
Think of it, does your first meal of the day consist primarily of wheat and sugar?
When eating real foods, you would just eat the egg. Skip the wheat product of the bagel and English muffin. Wheat in North America has been so genetically altered over the centuries to withstand our short growing season and climate. As a result, it no longer resembles the wheat of a thousand years ago.
Think about it—why is there a growing case of gluten intolerance and celiac disease? Does it have something to do with the wheat?
You will be both surprised and satisfied just by eating a couple of eggs in the morning. I add 2 slices of bacon with mine. Two eggs and two slices of bacon gives me the energy I need until noon. No mid morning craving. Just energy.
Skip the wheat and sugar parts of breakfast and see the results for yourself for a week. Eat 3 eggs for breakfast for a day or two if you need to.
That burning ache in your stomach that we usually interpret as hunger, is actually the need to feed the yeast growth in your gut. And if you know about growing yeast in breads and even alcohol, you know you need to feed it. It’s preferred food sources is more grains (wheat) and sugar. So starve out the yeast beast in your belly.
Let’s Not Forget The Coffee
Now in the above lifestyles I’ve mentioned, they differ on how you can have your coffee and drink it too. However, you should ditch the milk for sure and wean out the sugar totally. Don’t even get in the habit of using sugar substitute. Perhaps only for a time as you wean off the sweets. But it will only subconsciously feed your craving for sugars, even in the substitute form. Better to ditch the sugary taste all together.
The treat in my coffee is using a Tablespoon of 35% whipping cream (heavy cream). Using cream instead of milk is better because it contains less sugar, lactose, and more fats. Yes, more fats.
The fats will actually help keep you feeling full and satisfied. A side result is that you will desire to eat less during the day. Which if you are looking to lose some extra pounds, is a bonus.
And the cream in the coffee makes it divine!
You can also just drink your coffee black rather than adding milk or cream.
But, yes, you can still have your cup of Joe, just ditch the sugar, and if you still need something in it, go with the heaviest cream you have access to instead of milk.
You are just about to bite down into that steak and cheese submarine sandwich. But wait! Ditch the bun and the cheese so you can thoroughly enjoy the steak and its protein goodness. The meat is essential for providing the nutrients needed for building and repairing your muscles. Just keep the cheese if it is more of a cheddar cheese type, not the processed cheese slices. Remember, try to eat the more natural food source.
Eating real foods encourages you to dump the processed foods, sugars, starches, and some dairy products. The reason is that these are items that are not in their natural form. As such they will not be able to give you the nutrition that your body needs to stay strong and healthy.
Think of it, mankind has existed for thousands of years before pop, chips, and super sized hamburger meals. Oh, bring on the burger, just don’t include the bun and the sugary condiments.
I like to eat a burger with real cheddar cheese on top, with a slice of lettuce, tomato, and sometimes bacon. Either sandwich it between pieces of lettuce, or eat it gourmet style with a knife and fork. A superb burger with class! Skip the fries and pop though. Grab a bottle of water instead.
Eating Real Foods Is Satisfying
You may be concerned about cravings and always feeling hungry. Relax, you will find that when you eat real foods as they were intended to be consumed, that you will be more than satisfied.
You will be eating more protein foods instead of other items you’ve been consuming for years. Afterall, you know the cake and chips are not truly healthy. However, protein foods not only make you feel full faster, but it also causes your body to break down your fat cells.
Yes, tell your body, that the fat that it has been saving for a rainy day can now be shed. Bring on that rain! And bring on the meat!
That is the big key to your success on the real foods lifestyle. When you have enough protein in your system, you will never feel hungry and your body will constantly be breaking down old fat cells.
Eating Purer Meat Sources
But it is not just you that needs to eat more natural food sources. Even the livestock needs to eat more naturally as God intended. That is why, when possible, you should try to look for grass fed meats. When an animal, such as a cow, is grass fed as it’s body was intended to eat, the cow is processing its food source to access the essential nutrients naturally.
The result is that when you eat that beef, you too, will be accessing the essential nutrients you need in the more natural format. Again, as God intended you to eat. The essential nutrients in the beef are now passed on to you in the format that your body can properly process.
Now, this will be a transition. If you are struggling financially, the notion of buying more expensive cuts of meat just doesn’t fit in right now. I get it. It doesn’t in our grocery budget yet either. But as we eat more real foods, and ditch the expensive junk foods, money will be found. First to pay down debt, and then to add finesse to our real food eating.
So if you can’t buy grass-fed meats right away—don’t panic. Just eating more protein and ditching the sugars and starches is a great place to get started.
Fruits And Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are also essential real foods. When able, try to increase the amounts of organic varieties. Not only are organic fruits and vegetables packed with nutrients and hydration, but they are also full of flavor.
Most of us aren’t taught to combine our fruits or vegetables. Instead we eat as little as we can on the side of whatever our main meal is.
But when you are doing the real food lifestyle, foods like these will become your new best friend.
For example, instead of having corn as a side dish with your plain hamburger, why not cut that hamburger into cubes and add it to a large salad filled with tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, avocado, cucumber and spinach? Not only will you be getting the protein and flavor of the meat, but you will also be consuming a massive amount of healthy nutrient-filled vegetables.
Nuts And Seeds
Nuts and seeds are also essential real foods. One of the hardest things about sticking to a diet is getting through the workday or taking long trips. These are both times when you are away from home and away from your healthy foods. When this happens, you are more likely to eat something unhealthy and lose all of the progress you have made.
But if you keep nuts and seeds with you at all times, these real foods will be sure to keep you on your healthy eating path. Not only are they easy to pack, but they can also be stored at room temperature and they last a long time. Some people even keep a bag of mixed nuts in their car for those times when they get hungry while on the road.
