How To Use The Broccoli Stalk
Broccoli is a wonderful vegetable full of richness in vitamins and goodness. Including Vitamin C.
However, do you just cut the florets off the top of the broccoli bunch? What do you do with the stalks?
You can eat those too, did you know.
Remember, here at Free Stuff 4 Daily Needs we desire to EMPOWER you towards a HOPE and a FUTURE. One way to combat Food Security Issues is to make sure you aren’t wasting food you already have.
One of those valuable food sources you and your family may have been overlooking are broccoli stalks.
Sure, I agree, that as a raw vegetable source, eating the stalks is less than desirable.
However, with a little bit of preparation, they are very easy to throw in the pot with the broccoli florets. Cooked up all at one, and they will be tender, juicy and flavorful. While still holding all that nutritious goodness you desire to feed your family.
Peeling The Stalk
First off, just cut the broccoli florets off like you normally would. Split the florets to desired size and place in the saucepan.
Now, let’s move on to the broccoli stalk. So your second step is that you may need to cut about an inch off the bottom of the stalk. This part has probably become pretty dried out and woody in texture.
Thirdly, take your sharp knife and starting at one end of the broccoli stalk, carefully peel off the harder green coating. This is the woody part on the broccoli stalk.
It is actually this woody coating that has most people assuming that you can’t eat the broccoli stalk. Thus, they end up cutting off the florets and throwing the broccoli stalks into the compost.
But from today on, you are going to use those broccoli stalks, not only to:
- stretch your vegetables
- reduce your grocery costs
- increase the nutritional benefit to your meals
but to use them to help combat Food Security Issues in your family.
Lastly, all you now need to do is slice up this tender, peeled broccoli stalk into chunks or slices.
Cook The Broccoli As Normal
Add the sliced broccoli stalk to your saucepan with the broccoli florets. Now you proceed and cook as normal.
A basic way to cook broccoli florets and stalks is to put them in a large saucepan. Cover with water. Bring to a boil. Some people salt the water, but this is a personal preference whether you salt the water or not.
Continue to lightly boil the broccoli florets and stalks until the pieces are bright green and tender.
Drain and serve.
As broccoli is such a bright vegetable it is excellent to pair with almost any meats including fish, and chicken.
In this case I paired it with Cheeseburger Mini Meatloaf.
Use Broccoli Stalks In Soups And More
Now that you know how easy it is to use broccoli stalks, you can use your imagination. Include broccoli stalks in soups and stir frys. And used in a casserole makes sense too.
Fight back against Food Security Issues and stretch your vegetables further. You will be increasing the nutritional value to your family too.
Now you know how to use the broccoli stalk.
