How Is Your Indoor Vegetable Garden Growing?
A couple of weeks ago, in preparation for the summer growing season, it was suggested that you start early – inside. It really is easy, and economical to get started. You don’t require a fancy greenhouse or even special growing pots.
Just a couple of simple egg cartons with the lids removed will work nicely as simple starter planter pots. Fill with some potting soil and the seeds of your choice. Place in a well lit window and water daily.
Seeds Will Sprout Within Days
Within days you will see new growth springing forth from the ground. Along with those seeds comes EMPOWERMENT towards a HOPE and a FUTURE of providing fresh vegetables for your family in the near future.
Fight back against Food Security Issues—grow your own.
How did my plants do?
Well, all of the plants I had planted had sprouted except one variety. For some reason the cherry tomatoes didn’t sprout. Perhaps the seeds are too old.
But by having started some seeds indoors ahead of the growing season, gives you ample time to adjust your garden needs early. So now instead of buying pre-started big and cherry tomato plants at the greenhouse this year, I’ll only have to buy the cherry tomato plants.
That saves money already.
Turn The Plants Daily
Make sure that you have placed the egg cartons on a baking tray or something similar. As the egg cartons are made from a biodegradable material, and the water will seep through, this will prevent damage to the shelf where you have placed them.
You will very quickly notice that it is important to water them daily.
Additionally, you will need to turn the tray of egg cartons around every day too. It will become very easy to see that your plants are reaching for the sun. If you don’t keep turning them, your plants will grow on a lean instead of straight.
Only A Few More Weeks
Typically in Central Ontario, you don’t start planting vegetable plants and/or seeds until after the last frost. That usually occurs around the 3rd weekend of May. We usually refer to it as the May 2-4 weekend or Victoria Day.
So it won’t be too much longer before you can take your indoor vegetable garden and plant it outside.
What Will You Be Planting In Your Garden?
Well, according to my indoor vegetables garden that I’ve started, Barry and I will be enjoying the following:
- Early Tomatoes
- Green Beans
- Yellow Beans
Now, radishes do grow very quickly and an egg carton compartment isn’t big enough, but it was fun to plant a few seeds inside. The rest of my radishes will be planted by seeds in a couple of weeks outside. Next time, I’ll try to plant some inside in a deeper container. After all, radishes are a root vegetable, so they need that extra root space. An egg carton doesn’t provide that.
As for additional vegetables, when the time comes to move the garden outside, we will be including some of these too:
- Field Cucumbers
So, leave me a comment below. What are you planting for food for your family this year?
