Having The Faith Of A Child
Why is it that when we enter adulthood we lose our child like faith? I don’t know, and I struggle with this almost daily. Do you?
Let me share with you a time back when my youngest child demonstrated this faith to me. Why, Lord, can’t I trust You that easily?
Mom, Can I Have A Bike?
Back in the summer of 1998, I was a struggling single parent of 3 children. This was a year before Barry and I would meet and get married. However, that summer of 1998 was financially difficult. My youngest son had been so patient. He had asked me if I could buy him a bicycle. I had the heartbreaking job of explaining that after paying:
- rent– $706
- car payment and gasoline
there was no money left for extras such as a bicycle.
We didn’t have cable/satellite, internet, a cell phone or even a land line phone. I was able to pay for the barest of basics only.
My son, age 7, seemed pretty confident that he would soon be able to have a bike. He wasn’t upset by my explaining our budget situation. He just smiled and walked away.
Raking The Lawn
A few days later on a nice day I was raking and cleaning up the yard. Amazing how toys get everywhere. The landlord would be over the next day to cut the lawn, so things had to be cleaned up.
So there I was head down, concentrating on working in the yard. My son, off in a corner, was playing in his self-made sandbox with his toy trucks.
All of a sudden, out of nowhere, a $10 bill came floating into the yard and landed right at my feet. I was shocked. Where did that come from? It wasn’t even the slightest bit breezy.
I glanced up and down the street to see if I could locate the owner. No one was in sight on the sidewalk, and there wasn’t even any vehicles going by.
I picked up the $10 and said out loud, “Where did this money come from?”
My son, without missing a beat, said, “Oh! Is that ten dollars?”
I said, “Yes. How did you know?”
And as matter of factly as a 7 year old can say, he replied, “It’s mine. I asked God to give me $10 so we can go to a yard sale and buy me a bike.”
Stunned, I simply said, “Oh.”
It reminds me of that verse in scripture where it says Mary pondered this in her heart. (Luke 2:19)
So here I was pondering. Pondering the faith that my son just demonstrated. He had simply just asked God and he received.
What Does The Bible Say?
Yes, there are these verses too.
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
Or what man is there of you, who if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if ask a fish, will give him a serpent?
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father, which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”
Matthew 7:7-11 KJV
A Child’s Faith Demonstrated In Action
Quite simply my son made his request known to his Heavenly Father, and believed. He asked for $10 and received $10.
Why is it so hard for us adults? To just simply ask and believe.
He walked his child faith out in front of me in such a confident, matter of fact way, that frankly—left me stunned.
Again—why can’t I believe so simply?
Do you struggle with this too?
Buying A Bike
Well, as you can probably figure, the next day, being Saturday was Yard Sale day. As a family we all got up bright and early, grabbed breakfast, and started hunting down the signs in the neighborhood. My son had a mission—find his bike for $10.
Well, no surprise! After travelling around to a few yard sale locations we arrived at one with children’s toys and such. My son excitedly got out of the car and ran over to where a boy’s bicycle, just his size was leaning. He hopped on it with a huge grin on his face.
I glanced around to see who was in charge of the yard sale. Locating a man, I asked, “How much?”
Again, no surprise, he simply said, “Oh, the bike? Ten dollars.”
My son stated, “Pay him, mom. This is my bike.”
So, following the advice of my 7 year old son, I opened up my purse and gave the man the $10.
Unbelievable? Almost, except that this is true!
Dig Deep And Find Your Inner Child
My advice to myself and to you is to stop, breathe, and realize that God loves us all so much. He desires to have us reach out to Him with this simple faith and requests.
My son’s request wasn’t earth shattering, selfish or even over indulging. It was a simple request from a 7 year old boy to have $10 so he could buy a used bike.
What could be more precious in the eyes of his financially struggling mom, and more importantly, his Heavenly Father? How could God, Himself, refuse a request like this?
You and I both, need to dig deep within ourselves, and release that inner child. To come before God with our simple requests, and knowing without a doubt that He will answer us.
Ask God for your “$10 and a bike”. Believe, receive, and then go out for that bike ride like me and my family did.
Every time my faith waivers, I remember a 7 year old boy and how powerful his faith was. I want so bad to have that kind of faith. It is so simple, it seems complicated. But it isn’t. Having the faith of a child is within your reach and mine.
