Cleaning And Scrubbing The Floors
Day 13: The Last Clean Up
You are on the home stretch today. This is the last cleaning project left to deal with in this Pantry Challenge for Beginners. What is this last area to deal with in your kitchen?
By the time you are done, you will have it so shiny and clean you could almost eat off of it. I said, almost. So let’s get on with it.
What Tools Will You Need?
There are a few items you will need to make this clean up job an easy chore. Here is a list of what you require:
- empty spray bottle
- 2 cups water
- 2 Tablespoons white vinegar
- wash cloth
- bucket of hot water
First Step—Get The Floor Cleaner Assembled
This is such a simple cleaner that works well on all floor types. Whether your floor is wooden, laminate, or even tile.
Our floor is one Barry and I laid down several years ago. It is a floating floor that is a peel and stick tile and is laid in plank like pieces. We purchased it at our local Home Depot. A product from Allure flooring. We are quite pleased with how it is water resistant, which is an important feature in places like kitchens and bathrooms. Wet spills are inevitable. With the amount of foot traffic that we have, it is standing up very well against scratching and fading also. It is an inexpensive floor option to check into if you are looking at remodeling your floor in the future. However, back to today’s project—cleaning and scrubbing the floors.
So what do you need to make your own quick floor cleaner? Well, quite simply an empty clean spray bottle for starters. I’m using an old Windex bottle that I thoroughly cleaned out. Next you need a funnel in the top. That will just make filling it up with the ingredients less messy for sure. And as we’ve been trying to clean things up these last 2 weeks, we don’t want to be making a spill all over the counter. Even if it is water and vinegar.
Yes, that is all you need to make this cleanser. So pour 2 cups of water into the clean spray bottle. Next add 2 Tablespoons of white vinegar. Replace the spray nozzle onto the spray bottle. Give the bottle a quick shake. There! You are all set to go with your handy spray bottle floor cleaner.
Second Step—Sweep The Floor
Before you wash the floor, you need to sweep it. So grab the broom and dustpan and gather up all the crumbs, dust, and dirt. This will make your floor washing easier by not making your wash cloth quite as grungy.
Third Step—Get Down And Get Washing
Yes, I said, get down and get washing. I am a fan of washing your floors on your hands and knees. Why go to a gym for exercise, when just doing your ordinary household activities are all the workout you need. And it really isn’t hard. In fact, it will get your floor cleaner better than any mop or swiffer device.
So, you need your floor cleaner spray bottle, a wash cloth, a towel to dry the floor as you go, and finally a bucket of hot water.
Remember, the number one way to damage your floor is too much moisture or water laying on it. You will find that this method of washing your floors will keep excess water to a minimum, and your floor will be dry when completed. Because you are drying the floor as you go, there will be no need for a Wet Floor Cone in your kitchen.
So, let’s get cleaning, and this is how:
With your spray bottle, wash cloth, towel, and bucket or bowl of hot water, get down on your hands and knees. Take the spray bottle and spray a small area of the floor. Wet the wash cloth, wringing it out well. Use the wash cloth and wipe the area of the floor you just sprayed. Wiping back and forth, and giving it a bit of a scrubbing as needed. When you are satisfied that this area is clean, return the wash cloth to the bucket of hot water. Next, grab the towel and dry the floor.
Go onto the next area of floor and do the same.
Another Reason To Hand Wash The Floors
Now another reason I believe you should hand wash your floors is this is the only way you can properly clean along the edges and corners. Especially such as in my kitchen. You see there is an abutting of the cupboard that juts out over the baseboard a couple of inches. In fact, it would be impossible for other mops and such to get right into the corner and along the baseboard edge. Nothing beats a wash cloth and your hand for getting right into the nooks and crannies. Feeling things with your hands works not only for washing floors, but also for hand washing your dishes too.
So, just continue spraying and wiping small areas of the floor. Don’t forget to keep drying it as you go. After all, leaving puddles of water on your floor will damage it. In no time, you will have your floor washed, dried, and shiny clean.
See The Dirt In Your Bucket, Not On Your Floor
And you will be amazed at just how much dirt you were able to clean off of it. Just look at my bowl in the picture. The floor area I cleaned was only about 28 inches by 6 ½ feet. Because I was only cleaning a small area, that is why I only used a large bowl to hold my water. However, many of you do have a much bigger floor space to clean, so use a bucket of hot water. Or you can use a bowl and just change the water more often. This actually might be a better idea as your rinse water stays cleaner, meaning your wash cloth stays cleaner, and ultimately, your floor stays cleaner.
Now to be fair to the rest of you, I continued cleaning other areas of my home beyond this small area of floor. I cleaned for well over another hour, and still didn’t use up all the cleaner in the bottle.
A great benefit from cleaning this way is you don’t waste your cleaner either. You are only using exactly what you need, and no more. So keep this bottle of cleaner handy for future use. Psst, it also works great for cleaning greasy spills at the stove top too.
