Are You Turkeyed Out ??
Are you turkeyed out? Did you get 3 complete turkey dinners delivered to your door this past Christmas season? Do you still have 2 of those birds still in your freezer?
You are not alone! For some of you this is very true.
For others, you’re thinking–”You’re kidding, right?” No, I’m not. This scenario happens more often than you think. Some community groups just rush in without stopping to ask–”How can I help you?”. Instead, it is a case of, “Here—have a Turkey Dinner.”
We get phone calls every Thanksgiving and especially during the Christmas season from families on Social Assistance who have been suddenly swarmed by 3 or more groups who have shown up and in an act of compassion have swamped them with multiple turkey dinners. Now what do they do? They call us to assist of course, to find other families who do need them.
A TRUE STORY:
We had one family in Parry Sound call me laughing at her dilemma one year. After she explained how the previous weekend the local Fire Department had come and done a FOOD DRIVE in her subsidized housing complex—hmm, sounds silly doesn’t it—ask for food from the poor to feed the poor. But that is another issue.
But now a week later she had 3 separate groups bring her complete turkey dinners—unasked for and unannounced. She was laughing at how within an hour and a half—all 3 turkey dinners arrived. No sooner did she get dinner #1 put in the freezer, fridge and cupboards when the next group showed up. She tried to stop them and explain, but they insisted. Her name had made it on their list, so here was a turkey dinner. While still pondering how to get the 2nd turkey put away, yet again—a knock on the door.
What? Another group? She’d made it on some other groups list? Another complete turkey dinner? Yup!
Part of her laughing was also because she was amazed at how well timed it was that these 3 groups had paced themselves out and not shown up at the same time.
Now she did share with me which various organizations had brought her these generous meals—however I won’t mention them here, because although misguided—their hearts and intentions meant well.
SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS–DID YOU STOP TO ASK?
But, I have to ask these Social Organizations—did you stop to ask? Or did you just rush in with a perceived perception of a situation and NEED and your solution? Are you causing families to be “turkey”ed out?
Did you meet the TRUE NEED or just provide a feel good situation for you and your group?
These are questions that we here at Free Stuff 4 Daily Needs need to continually stop and ask ourselves. We’ve seen too many instances of when “Helping” has actually “Hurt” the recipient more—and their NEEDS are still not being addressed or resolved.
A common question we ask Clients is “How can we help you?” “What do you need?” “What is the most important thing on your list you NEED to have?”
We try to work with our clients to EMPOWER THEM in their situations by looking to them for direction in how to better their situations.
Even here in Gravenhurst this past Christmas we had another family call us to come and pick up Turkey #2 and #3 (Hmm, is that like Thing 1 and Thing 2? lol) that they had also received. She did figure she could make use of the veggies and such—but really? Turkey until February? “No thanks”, she said.
We did it too !
As Barry and I tried to find homes for these turkeys, we gave one of them to a recently unemployed family—only to discover—we did the same thing!!
We took them the turkey, unannounced, to discover they were cooking a turkey, also just given to them and they’d be having turkey dinner with extended family out of town over the holidays. They laughed and graciously accepted the food basket and yup—turkey.
But even now, Barry and I still sit here with 2 turkeys in our own freezer—hmm–too hot in summer to have turkey dinner–
I know! For those of us who are suffering from “overstuffed” lol Turkey freezers—we need to band together and come up with other occasions to cook these up besides Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter—because at an average of even 2 donated turkeys for each of these events – you might still have 2 or 3 birds in the freezer.
Hmm, is there an actual National Turkey Dinner Day? Are you “turkey”ed out?
